About Sabe and Obi-Wan

Disguised as Amidala, Sabe is rescued by a young Padawan Jedi named Obiwan According to many fan fiction stories about Sabé and Obi-Wan Kenobi, the handmaiden and Jedi Padawan met after Obi-Wan leapt from a Naboo balcony to Sabé’s rescue. Sabé, being disguised as Queen Amidala of Naboo, is watched after by Obi-Wan as they escape from the planet into the stars. After an emergency landing on a remote and desolate planet called Tatooine, Obi-Wan and Sabé are left to watch over the ship, the crew--and each other--for three days. As they waited together, perhaps their mutual frustration and restlessness drew them together. Most likely a friendship sprang up between them, creating a seed of a root that could someday develop into love.

As Jar Jar looks on, the maiden and the knight share a glance Certain characteristics and dynamics that Sabé and Obi-Wan possess could create balance and harmony in friendship and romance. Both are loyal and strong, dutiful--and believers in peace. Because of Sabé's limited Star Wars screentime, little about her is canonical fact, but many fans have used reference from the film and books to decide that she has a playful sense of humor, a clever wit, and a strong desire to succeed. She is obviously a girl who understands duty and sacrifice; after all, she willingly places herself in immediate danger by posing as Queen, casting herself aside to protect Amidala, and ultimately, the people of Naboo. After landing on Coruscant, the pair exchanges a knowing look Obi-Wan is a person whose highest duty and calling in life is following the calling of the Force. While any relationship between the decoy and the young Jedi Knight would most likely stay a friendship, many fan stories examine what might happen if the two became romantically involved. The stories vary in length, subject matter, time period, and outcome, but most of these fics create an amazing dynamic between the Nubian girl and the Jedi Knight. Many stories solve questions like What if their paths crossed after Episode I? and/or What would happen if feelings developed between the two?

A relationship between Sabé and Obi-Wan could possibly improve the Star Wars story. In Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Obi-Wan is increasingly concerned about Anakin's feelings for Senator Padmé Amidala. A relationship shown on-screen between Sabé and Obi-Wan could have been used as a contrast to Anakin and Padmé's relationship. Showing Obi-Wan suppressing his feelings in order to maintain his stature as a Jedi would have been another way to emphasize the failings of Anakin. A Sabé/Obi-Wan relationship would create a new dynamic between Obi-Wan and Anakin, as well as deepen Padmé's character.

The story of Sabé and Obi-Wan is a classic romance made unique by the two characters involved in it. Because of the circumstances, it bears the makings for a tragedy, an unrequited and touching lovestory. But it could also unfold as an Alternate Universe story of a dark and passionate forbidden love. The Sobiwan story is open-ended enough that almost anything can be imagined and written out. And maybe that's the beauty of it!

As Sobiwan fans ourselves, we remind you that the only way to get a real understanding of the 'ship is to read some fanfic, write some, and keep reading this website. Also, remember this: Sobiwan was a love so secret, not even George Lucas knew about it!
