About Handmaiden Sabé
Sabe in her early twenties on Naboo Sabé, last name unknown, was played by Keira Knightley. In her late teens during Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Sabé was Queen Amidala's most important handmaiden and bodyguard. During a dangerous situation, in a gambit devised by Capain Panaka, Sabé during her handmaiden training Sabé quietly traded places with Amidala and took on the role of the Queen. This way, any would be assassins were drawn to the false Queen, and Padmé would be able to escape. In order to conceal the switch and still allow Padmé to make decisions the two girls devised a secret code to allow them to communicate. Because they spent so much time together devising the codes and training, Padmé and Sabé became very close friends.

While Sabé's life before and after her occupation as principal handmaiden is mostly speculation, many fans have agreed that she probably came from a humble beginning, perhaps as a farmer's daughter or even an orphan. Because of the secretive, humble, and quiet role being a Queen's handmaiden, not much is known about Sabe's personality. We can assume certain things from what we see on screen and in the Star Wars books. She is patient. She has to wait several days on the Queen's starship, not knowing what will happen or if she will survive. She is cunning and intelligient. According to several sources, she is the cleverest Handmaiden. She is brave. It takes tenacity to be a young girl pretending to be the Queen, who is targeted for assassination.

Sabe during the Clone WarsShe strong and daring. She daringly steps into the line of fire at the battle for Naboo, several times, narrowly escaping being shot. She also has a sense of humor evident in the way she makes Padmé (not Rabé or Eirtaé!) clean R2-D2 up, a smile on her painted face. She also dislikes Palpatine, she frowns at him when he visits Naboo. Not much more is known about the girl behind the mask, but it's safe to say that Sabé is very loyal and dedicated, willing to risk her life to protect her friend and Queen. However, there may be a shyer, and less confident side to Sabé. Did she have some apprehension about taking the role of the Queen, worried that she would make a terrible mistake and give the real Queen away? Did she fear for her own safety at all? And how much of her own inner turmoil did Obi-Wan sense through the force?

Was Sabe maybe Force sensitive?Even though Sabé had convinced some that she was actually Queen Amidala, we are not sure if Obi-Wan ever believed it.

What happened to Sabé after the invasion is unknown. Did she go on to become an Ambassador? Perhaps because of her failed attempt at negotiating with Boss Nass, she decided to perfect the art of argument, and went to politics. Some of the fans think she remained a handmaiden and decoy, assuming a role of utmost importance and discretion. Others believe she lived a life of humanitarianism and service in some other way. What do you think? Whatever her continuing role in the Star Wars galaxy, she had a part to play and a fate to live out... and we're guessing whatever she went onto do was very important, just not something that put her in the spotlight. A shadow, a whisper, a backdrop... that is the role of a handmaiden.

... As Sabé and I switched places, I thanked her for her courage and skill. "We all need courage now. You most of all," Sabé answered and pressed my hand. There is a fierceness in her quiet ways. Her touch was gentle, but her eyes blazed. "I know you will see us through this, Queen Amidala."
Her faith gives me courage. I know Sabé is glad to help. But I sensed her relief when she donned her handmaiden's cloak again.
